International Invitational Swimming Meet [Program]

Los Angeles: 1958. 10 x 7", stapled pictorial wrappers, 32 pp. A scarce program for a Los Angeles swim meet that featured leading swimmers from Japan, the United States, and Australia, sponsored by the Southern California Swimming Association together with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Southern California. The meet was intended in part to promote solidarity between the United States and Japan. The first such meet, held in 1949, featured a star studded cast of Japanese swimmers headlined by a swimmer nicknamed "The Flying Fish;” the front cover of this booklet was taken from a flying fish themed tray presented to Fred Wada, organizer of the 1949 event, who is honored in the booklet. The text contains messages from the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Southern California and the Consulate General of Japan, a program of events, portraits of swimmers, and ads for local businesses, including many Japanese American businesses. Also of interest is a printed message from a local Japanese American business owner offering to purchase event tickets for Japanese seasonal workers employed in California. Mild creasing and toning to pages, program pages filled out in pencil with tournament results. Item #9352
