Cyanotype and Ephemera Album Compiled by a Student at Tufts College

Massachussets: 1896-1898. Scrapbook measuring 9.5 x 6.5", consisting of a repurposed Tufts College "Brown and Blue" yearbook from 1896, full of photographs and ephemera belonging to Anson Merrill Titus, a Tufts graduate with the 1898 class. Includes a total of 24 photographs, including 19 cyanotypes, four albumen prints, and one metallic souvenir photo, plus 79 ephemeral items, as well as clippings and clipped autographs of classmates. Some stunning photographs are present--a 14.5 x 6" panoramic cyanotype view of the college, an 8 x 6.5" cyanotype view, two 8 x 6.5" cyanotype group portraits, photos of students and dorm interiors, two cyanotypes of performances by the Tufts Glee & Mandolin Club, and three albumen photographs of a celebratory bonfire after a football victory over Harvard in which students appear to be burning a scoreboard (one of which is decorated by sketches of skeletons dancing on the flames holding a "Tufts 14 Harvard 7" flag, which have been etched into the negative). Ephemera includes dance cards, programs for theatrical performances and concerts (including five programs for Glee & Mandolin Club Performances and two programs for Tufts Minstrel performances), Titus's "bond" for entrance to the college, a leaflet printing bawdy songs about Freshmen, sophomores, and faculty, several other song sheets (included printed, typed, and handwritten school song and cheer sheets), two menus (one printing a list of toasts), invitations, an elaborate sketch of an attic suite in Elms House, a playful ink sketch of "our tenor on a Sunday morning," event tickets, a broadside for a "Spinster's Fortnightly Club" possibly featuring cross-dressing students, business cards, a freshman-sophomore football game broadside, a piece of Asian calligraphy, and more. There are also a couple of items from when Titus took a class at M.I.T. (he was an engineering student while at Tufts), as well as a few pieces of ephemera from the Somerville Universalist Church, including an attractive chromolithographed invitation to a Japanese "Japland" tea at the church. Also of interest is a several page program for the 1898 "Wellesley Float" women's regatta. Covers detached, lacking upper 2.5 inches of spine covering, creasing, occasional soiling. Item #7652
