Item #5790 Prospectus for the Southern California Horticulturalist

Prospectus for the Southern California Horticulturalist

[Los Angeles]: Southern California Horticultural Society, 1877. Broadside measuring 10 x 8". The prospectus for the Southern California Horticulturalist, a periodical first published by the Southern California Horticultural Society in September, 1877. The broadside outlines the format and content of the periodical ("devoted to the interests of Horticulture and such other questions as directly interest Southern California"), and prints a list of prices for placing advertisements in the periodical. The society itself was founded in April, 1877, and occupied itself mainly with the publication of this periodical, and with the establishment of an annual Horticultural and Agricultural Exhibition--the first of which, held jointly with another society, is mentioned in this broadside. In 1878, the society constructed a pavilion for its own exhibition, however the pavilion was torn down in 1882 as the society could not sustain the expense in what was at the time a small and economically depressed region. The broadside is signed in type by Luther M. Holt and Thomas A. Garey, two founders of the town of Pomona, James de Barth Shorb, a developer of Alhambra, and Caroline Severance, a prominent abolitionist, suffragist, and founder of women's clubs. Broadside in excellent condition, with toning and a hint of foxing. Item #5790
