TONGA HYMNAL
Kafue, North Rhodesia: Methodist Book Room, Clixby Estate, 1930s-1950s. 12mo, 39pp, green wrappers, staple bound. A scarce hymnal produced for the Tonga speaking Christians of what is today Zambia. This copy inscribed by C.R. Hopgood, active around the year 1940, the author of several Tonga grammars and language books . Not in OCLC. B.S. Chuba's "The Development of Hymnody in Zambia" notes two Tonda hymnals printed by the Methodist Book Room, one in 1939 containing 64 hymns, and one in 1956, containing 89. However, this booklet is smaller, with only 39 hymns. Bit of toning to pages, offsetting and rubbing to wrappers, rusting to staples. Item #4388
