A Few Famous Recipes By An Old Kentucky Cook

Lexington, Kentucky: Lexington Roller Mills Co, [1911]. 12mo, accordion style folding brochure with six panels of text to each side, including illustrations to front and rear panels. A promotional collections of recipes by the Lexington Roller Mills Co, consisting of "a few recipes which were given us by an old cook, famous in the Blue Grass region for her skill in the kitchen. They have been in use in this section for three or more generations, having been faithfully tried, time and again." The illustration on the front panel suggests that this "old cook" was an African American woman; whether true or not, this brochure represents an early use of the mammy stereotype for promotional purposes. The brochure prints 18 recipes for baked goods, most making use of the company's "Lexington Cream Flour". Undated, but we found advertisements for the brochure in 1911 newspapers.
