The first issue of the proceedings of the American Society for Psychical Research, the oldest organization in the United States devoted to the investigation of psychic phenomena. The society was founded in 1884 by a group of prominent psychologists and scientists including G. Stanley Hall and William James. The group met at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, aiming to investigate psychic and other unexplained phenomena in an objective, scientific manner. These proceedings print the society's constitution, a list of members and associates (Theodore Roosevelt is listed among the latter), and the first five circulars of the society. The latter are illustrated, and outline the replicable experiments conducted by the Committee on Thought-Transference.
