Collection of Photographs of the Tomah Indian School in Wisconsin
Tomah, Wisconsin: 1920s. A collection of nine photo album leaves, each 11 x 6.5", containing a total of 86 black and white photos pasted on, most captioned in manuscript on the margin. A well-identified collection of photographs of the Tomah Indian School, a federal boarding school for Winnebago children, located in Wisconsin. According to an online seller's description that came with the collection, the photographs originate from the estate of Willodeen Price, a teacher at the school in the 1920s. The images show school buildings, students posed on school grounds (many identified in manuscript), and school employees (the cook, teachers, the principal, etc). There are also several photos of the school's baseball team, with many of the players identified, including "Thomas Thunder" and "Alec Waupoose (Oneida)". In addition, there are a few real photo postcards showing the school, as well as a series of photos of Native Americans in traditional dress. This includes a few photos of a Winnebago pow-wow, an image showing "Chippewas dressed for pow-wow", and two images of a man named "Joe Smoke" in traditional attire. In very good condition with creasing and/or chips to a few photos. Item #15315
