Collection of Press Photos of Navajo Education in the Southwest

Various Places: 1950s to 1970s. A collection of 19 photographs measuring between 8 x 9" and 8 x 10", each captioned and stamped on the back. A group of press photographs documenting Navajo education in the Southwest during the 1950s through 1970s. These appear to be file copies kept at a newspaper or other institution, each stamped "Indians--Navajo--Flat Drawer" on the back. Photographers include Joern Gerdts of Salt Lake City, Milton Snow of the U.S. Indian Service, Eugene H. Price of Window Rock, Arizona (on the Navajo reservation), Far West Photography of Albuquerque, and a few Denver Post staff photographers. Several schools catering to Navajo students are identified: New Shiprock Boarding School, Fort Wingate High School, Garfield Junior High School, Rough Rock Demonstration School, Fort Defiance School, and the Intermountain Indian School. The images depict school classes, school buildings, vocational education, and include portraits of students at work, study, and play. The photos have typed or handwritten captions on the backs, and some also have clippings from newspapers in which they likely appeared. These captions provide details and stories that add context, i.e. "First day in school and Bessie Begay gets a death grip on her pencil as she tries to write her name for the first time..." A series of the images focus on overcrowded conditions in the schools, i.e. "An example of overcrowded class room. Note the two boys behind the teacher at the table"; "The high school boys have to hold their meetings outdoors because of lack of space in their dormitories". Toning to a few of the images, a few images with staining, mainly to versos, very good overall. Item #15301
