Photograph Album Compiled by Dominic McCluskey, an Alaskan Native Student at the Chemawa Indian School
Salem, Oregon and Alaska: 1930s. String tied photo album binding of black cloth, 11.75 x 7”, containing 244 photographs, most cornered cornered or pasted in, a handful laid in loose, together with 16 souvenir prints. Many of the photos are accompanied by handwritten captions on the album leaves. A photograph album compiled by Dominic Peter McCluskey (b. 1908), while attending the Chemawa Indian School in Chemawa, Oregon. According to census records, McCluskey was an Alaskan Native born in Killisnoo, Alaska, home to a historic Tlingit community. He attended the Chemawa Indian School in 1930, and went on to work in the salmon fishing industry (a 1937 letter regarding his membership in the Alaska Salmon Purse Seiners Union is laid into the album).
The first series of pages consists of captioned images of students at the school, including some candid shots (i.e. a student lying across railway tracks), interspersed with images of rodeo events, including the Pendleton Round Up. Native Americans have a long history of participating at the Pendleton Round Up, including at an “Indian Village” on site. Next are a few pages of small student portraits trimmed from larger photographs and from a printed school publication. The second half of the album contains many images of life at the school, including field day, student bands (“Club Ramblers” and “Tin Can Orchestra”), the school YMCA club, students dressed in traditional garb, students dressed up as pilgrims for Thanksgiving, and many other captioned images of students and staff. There are also a number of images taken back home in the Tlingit village of Klawack, Alaska, including a baseball game, the 4th of July Celebration, and McCluskey posed with the crew of his fishing boat. Other than the images on the last four leaves of the album, the vast majority are captioned. Many of the images in the latter portion of the album have been artistically trimmed by the compiler. Staining to covers, some images missing, soiling to album leaves, photos faded or have a washed out quality, but are generally legible. Item #15291
