Letter by a Teacher at the Wealaka Mission School in the Indian Territory

Wealaka, Indian Territory: 1888. Bifolium, 8 x 5", with [4] pp of ink manuscript, headed "Wealaka Mission, April 15, '88" and signed "L.B. Welch." Together with original mailing envelope. A letter from Miss L.B. Welch, a teacher at the Wealaka Mission School, a Presbyterian run institution for Muscogee Creek children that operatied in the Creek Nation, Indian Territory (today Oklahoma), between 1882 and 1907. The letter contains details about the school and the mission, including the movements of the teachers and students, and a recent measles outbreak: "Our school closed the 3d of April a great many of the children had gone home before this time on account of the measles breaking out in the school...Miss Chambers one of the teachers is going to Muscogee to Miss Alice Robertson's school. She was in need of a teacher...Mr. Longbridge went across the river today to preach...The peach and cherries here have been in full bloom the apple trees are coming out...The men have finished planting corn...We had sixteen cases of the measles...Mr. Brown is going to move his store away from here. We are so glad it is such a nuisance always a drunken crowd around it and they often come to the Mission and cause disturbance." In very good condition, envelope torn with stamp removed. Item #15204
