Collection of Photographs of the Osage Indian School in Pawhuska, Oklahoma
Pawhuska, Oklahoma: 1900 to 1910. A collection of nine real photo postcards, two pictorial postcards, two silver gelatin prints, and three cabinet photos. 13 of the photographs contain handwritten captions or captions in the negative. A compelling collection of images of the Osage Indian School in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. This government run boarding school was established in 1874, and closed in 1921, after the Osage began sending their children to public schools instead. Of particular interest is a 4 x 2.75" cabinet photo, circa 1900-1905, of a group of young Osage baseball players in uniform, captioned "Osage Indian School Ball Team." Another 3.5 x 3.5" cabinet photo, meanwhile, depicts "Indian school children planting garden," while the third cabinet photo, 4.75 x 4", shows two women standing in front of the school building. Next are two silver prints, one depicting students on parade (3.5 x 2.75"), the other depicting an unidentified white man (3.5 x 3.5"). The real photo postcards measure 5.25 x 3.5", and are generally dated or postmarked 1907 or 1908. Four rppcs depict the school buildings or campus (one attributed to Landrecht). Three other images depict a fire that occurred at the school on September 1, 1908, including evacuated students milling about in front of the burning buildings, alongside possessions on the ground. Another image shows female students in costume carrying bows and arrows, while the last photo shows an "Osage Indian Boy." Finally, one of the pictorial postcards shows the school building, and the other shows the ruins of the boys' dormitory after the 1908 fire. Staining to one rppc and "planting garden" cabinet card, bit of soiling and wear to images, chip to upper corner of one silver print, generally very good. Item #15038
