California Cook Book (Spanish Recipes)
Santa Ana, California: Gilbert P. Campbell, Printer, [1920s]. Octavo, tan wrappers with black lettering and illustration, 91, [1] pp, advertisements for San Juan Capistrano businesses. Titled to front cover "El Camino Real California Cook Book." A San Juan Capistrano community cookbook. Undated, but prints an advertisement in favor of building a road from Capistrano to Elsinore, which was under discussion in the 1920s. Recipes are attributed to community members, including many members of historic Californio families. The first page prints a "California Spanish Menu," which is followed by a ten page section of "California Spanish Recipes." These include tortillas, chorisos, Mexican Spaghetti, green corn tamales, and more. A number of recipes in this section are attributed to members of Californio families, including Mrs. Frank Rios, Mrs. Tom Himenez, Marie Errecarte, Mrs. Joe Nieblas, Mrs. Lee Garcia, and Mrs. R.N. Yorba. The rest of the book contains recipes for California Chicken Pie, East Indian Curry, bakes opossum, San Francisco Stew, California Mountain Trout, date whole-wheat muffins, An Oriental Pan Cake or Delicacy, okra creole, war cake, date pudding, and more. Other contributors include Mrs. Zoila Miguelina, Paul Ocampo, Jr, Mrs. Cip Errecarte, and Mrs. Emeline Jimenez. UCLA, University of Denver, and Michigan State in OCLC.
