Savings and Thrift Cookbook

[Clio, South Carolina]: Circa 1920s to 1930s. 9.5 x 6.25", green pictorial wrappers, 64, [2] pp. A scarce cookbook issued as a promotional device by a bank in the rural town of Clio, South Carolina. According to the introduction, "this book has been very carefully compiled from the best recipes given as favorites of good practical cooks throughout the country. Its use in your kitchen will promote thrift...Especially in the last few years the women of America have learned to practice thrift in the kitchen. With the adjustment of prices these thrifty methods continued will save not only food but money." Recipes are attributed to women around the country, suggesting that this was a stock cookbook adopted by the bank. The emphasis on thrift through difficult economic times suggests that the cookbook was published during the Great Depression or in the wake of World War I. The book also contains several pages of information about the bank, including a page relating to checking accounts for women. Not found in OCLC. A good copy with soiling and wear to covers, paper abrasions to covers with loss to outer layer, mild toning to pages. Item #11190
